Blog #9

It's almost over!!! This is the second to last blog. I haven't had a chance to post because I wasn't feeling to well over the weekend. Once again, I've been trying to keep up with the recycling and all of the other stuff that I mentioned. My paper towel usage has really dropped which is a huge progress. In the past couple of weeks I think I've used only about five paper towels. I'm going to pat myself on the back for that.

Other than that I have been trying to keep up with being environmentally conscious. I'm definitely not going to stop after the class and the blogging end. I'm at a loss of what to say because I've already said everything that I wanted to. I guess it's only fair being that this is almost the last blog.

I'll post the last blog soon and finish off the blogs.

Blog #8

I didn't get a chance to post week 8 last week because my computer wasn't really cooperating with me and I was also finishing my media mid term. I will say this though....I really haven't done much sine blog #7. I've tried to reduce my daily impact but it's just so hard. No matter what I try to do something always messes me up. I did use less paper towels which I am proud of. If there's anything that I'm becoming better at, it's not using as much paper towels as I used to.

Believe it or not I still haven't found a glass bottle that I can carry around with me. I'm really thinking that there is some conspiracy against me. I've gone into different stores and supermarkets and I haven't been able to find anything. It's ridiculous. Other than that I've been keeping up with what I said that I would do. I've been recycling, throwing away anything that isn't and like I said before, I haven't been using as many paper towels.

The blogs are almost done so I'm hoping that I can do everything that I said that I was going to before the weeks are over. I'm really going to push for it. Kind of how runners push out the last couple of miles in a marathon. I'm almost there and I can't give up until I reach my goal.

Amerian Museum of Natural History Trip

Today at the museum there were a lot of cool things. The exhibit that I found most interesting were the North American animals. Sorry Dr.Smith, not that what you had us searching for wasn't interesting I just found the animals to be most appealing. I just wish that they were real. I guess I would have to go to the zoo for that.

While in the neanderthal exhibit in the Spitzer Hall of Human Origins there was an elderly woman who started talking to us. At first I thought that she was a crazy old lady but then I realized that she was a volunteer worker. It turned out that she was really informative and helpful with explaining what the neanderthals did and how they lived. I actually took a video of her with my phone but the upload was taking a ridiculously long time (Hours) so i had to cancel it. When I have more time I'll post it. The elderly woman actually provided all of the Ethos, Pathos and Logos that we needed for that exhibit. I did take some pictures of the neanderthals. Here, to the left, is a woman who is skinning some animal and smoothing out the inner skin. To the right is a man who is sharpening a branch or some piece of wood to create a weapon. As you can probably tell both the man and woman were in the same display model. According to the volunteer woman they were probably brother and sister. What can't be seen is that there is another woman in the display with them and again according to the elderly volunteer woman, she was their mother. It was interesting to see that people actually lived like that millions or billions of years ago. Whats even more amazing is that there are people that still do live like that in the world.

The exhibit about the earth, I forgot the name of it, was also nice to see. There were a lot of infromation about global warming. There were pictures, diagrams and videos about the topic. So if there were any non-believers in global warming, that exhibit should have proved them wrong. I also took a video with my phone of another video. I would've posted it but I didn't want to go through that whole uploading process again. The video was, as I said before, about global warming and it was a really good informative video. I did take some pictures of the other charts and diagrams but they didn't come out that good but I might post them anyway.

In the end the trip was fun. I can actually say that I left learning something that I hadn't known when I went in. I might actually go again and visit all of the exhibits. As soon as I format the videos to be alittle smaller I'll try to post them and the rest of the pictures that I took.

Blog # 7

This past week once again I didn't live up to what I said that I would. Belive me I tried and the old habbits just won't cease. I must have bought at least 10 plastic bottles but I did use less paper towels. I did say that not using paper towels would be difficult for me. This week I really tried to not use any, which I didn't, but I did use a lot less. I am making some progress which is definitely a start.

As for the plastic bottle issue, I still can't find a glass bottle that I can reuse. I'm going to keep looking an hopefully I'll find one. Although I did buy some drinks that came in a glass bottle and I've kept them but the caps aren't very secure so I can't exactly bring them with me where ever I go. The thing that makes the plastic bottles an issue is that besides the fact that I can't find a glass bottle but when I got to the gym I need to keep myself hydrated. That forces me to buy a bottle of water.

The point to all of this is that the whole experiment has turned to be slightly more difficult than I expected. I don't plan on giving up but there are obstacles which isn't making this any easier.

Blog #6

This past week I wrote in blog five about all of the things that I need to due in order to produce a more positive impact on the environment. I even listed the things that I need to focus on. Through out the week I tried to due all that I said that I would try to do. Well, unfortunately I didn't do what I said. I still bought plastic bottles and I used a lot of paper towels. It's really hard to not use those items. Believe me every time I used a paper towel or bought a plastic bottle I kept thinking in the back of my head how I wasn't being a positive impact.

I'm still looking for that glass bottle to keep refilling with but I can't seem to find one. I guess I'm gonna have to look a little harder. As for the paper towel issue, that I'm really going to have to work on because like I mentioned in my last blog my mom just bought a whole case of fifteen. That's just not right if you ask me. Just not fair at all. All I can say is that I'm going to try my best to do what I said I would and hopefully not disappoint.

Blog # 5

After doing the experiment and doing some research I now have to see where in my life can I either "go green" or "low impact". One thing that I know that I can improve on is stop buying water bottles and other beverages in plastic bottles. Instead I can do what Dr.Smith is doing and buy one bottle either glass or a hard plastic and keep refilling it with drinks. Another thing that I can do, as I'm sure I've mentioned in my previous blogs, is not buy items that are not recyclable. I hate repeating myself but, buying bio degradable products is something that I can try and do a lot more of. I'm going to try and this is a big TRY but I'm going to try and not use paper towels. It doesn't help that my mother just bought a pack of fifteen or so bounty paper towels. Another thing is not using or buying plastic forks and spoons. Which I had no idea about but that's a big thanks to http://notoriousrambo.blogspot.com/ for informing me of that. Of course I plan on doing everything that I have been doing but, taking it further and really expanding on it.

My "go green" and "low impact" list
  • Buy a glass or hard plastic bottle for drinks
  • Not using paper towels (that will be the hardest for me to do)
  • Buy more bio biodegradable products
  • Try to buy environment friendly household cleaners
  • Use less hot water
  • Turn off unnecessary electric appliances
  • Use less paper
  • Use recyclable paper

Final Weigh In

It was amusing to see the other two people who did the experiment to each walk in with one big bag of trash on the weigh in day. After we weighed our wastes we found that everything weighed the same. Although it wasn't the 4.6 lbs that my research had led me to, the weight came to about 1.5 lbs. We then calculated how much it would add up to for the entire year. The total came out to be 274.5 lbs. Now that's a lot considering that for two days my trash only weighed 1.5 lbs. Another thing that both you and I need to consider is that I somewhat purposely tried to not add anything heavy. Basically I was avoiding drinking from bottles, eating from plastic containers and not using paper as much. In a way I cheated on the experiment but it was ok because the professor admitted to doing the same thing.

The experiment in fact, despite our intentions to not add too much trash, was informative and helpful. It showed us that even though our total weights were little the yearly result was large. Just imagine every single person in the US by the end of the year accumulated 274.5 lbs of waste. There are billions of people living in the US, so that is a lot of trash in the US alone.

This experiment was helpful for me to make better decisions on recycling and reducing my trash accumulations and hopefully it was for you as well.
